I often say that when you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science, whatever the matter may be.“我經常說，當你可以測量你說談論的事物時，當你能用數字來表達它的時候，你才能對它真正有所了解; 而當你無法測量它，也無法用數字來表達它時，你的知識是貧乏而不令人滿意的；不能進行定量測定的思想，或許是知識的開端，但無論如何，這樣的思想還沒有發展到科學階段 。
