A living hinge is a hinge (flexure bearing) made from the same material as the two rigid pieces it connects, rather than cloth, leather, or some other flexible substance. It is typically thinned or cut to allow the rigid pieces to bend along the line of the hinge. The minimal friction and very little wear in such a hinge makes it useful in the design of microelectromechanical systems, and the low cost and ease of manufacturing makes them quite common in disposable packaging1]

維基百科定義中，強調了活動鉸鏈的材質和其相連的兩個材質是相同的，而不是使用布質、皮革活著其它柔性材質。日常生活中最常見于一次性物品和其它低成本的注塑成型的塑料產品，比如下面的保鮮盒中邊扣就是典型的活動鉸鏈：
活動鉸鏈在中密度纖維板（MDF）切割中的應用，很顯然通過加入鉸鏈，可以增強模型的靈活性。雖然MDF材質更厚更脆，但是使用該材質制作活動鉸鏈也是可能的，比如下面的一個筆記本封面的設計：
活動鉸鏈的另外一個功能是為模型增加倒角，例如下面為樹莓派做的一個保護盒中四邊均加入了鉸鏈的倒角：
